Shaving the moustache

331 - وقال صلى الله عليه وآله: ”إن المجوس جزوا لحاهم ووفّروا شواربهم، وإنّا نجزُّ الشوارب ونعفي اللحى، وهي الفطرة“. (من لا يحضره الفقيه للصدوق عليه الرحمة ج1 ص130

331- The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Indeed the majoos shave off their beards and lengthen their mustaches, while we shave off our mustaches and leave the beard (to grow), and this is the fitrah (the correct natural way)." ("Man la yahduruhul faqih" by Shaikh Saduq,Volume 1 Page 130)

٣٢٩ - وقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: " حفوا الشوارب واعفوا اللحى، ولا تشبهوا باليهود(من لا يحضره الفقيه للصدوق عليه الرحمة ج1 ص130) قال في الوافي: «الحف: الاحفاء ، وهو الاستقصاء في الامر والمبالغة فيه، واحفاء الشارب: المبالغة في جزه

المشهور في المدرسة القمية أن مرسلات الشيخ الصدوق الجزمية معتبرة، وممن يرى هذا الرأي الإمام الخميني «عليه الرحمة (الشيخ مرتضى الباشا * - 5 / 8 / 2005م - 3:10 م)

"It is highly common in the hawza ilmiyah of Qum that mursal ahadith of Shaikh Saduq (ra) are dogmatically accepted as being authentic, and among those who held this view included Imam Khomeini." (Ayatullah Shaikh Murtada al Basha, on 5/8/2005, 3.10pm)

من كتاب المحاسن ، عن الصادق ( عليه السلام ) قال : حلق الشوارب من السنة (مكارم الأخلاق للشيخ الطبرسي ص٦٧

From the book al Mahasin (Shaikh al Barqi): From Imam Sadiq (as): "Shaving off the mustache is from the sunnah." ("Makarimul akhlaq" by Shaikh Tabrisi, Page 67)

Fatwas of contemporary scholars

Ayatullah Muhammad Jamil Hamudi al Amuli:

ففي موثقة السكوني عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم (لا يطولنَّ أحدكم شاربه فإن الشيطان يتخذه مخبئاً يستتر به)، ولأجل دفع مفسدة الشيطان بطول الشارب أمر أئمتنا الطاهرون عليهم السلام بحفّ الشارب، والحفُّ هو المبالغة في جزِّه حتى يلتصق بالعسيب وهو منبت الشعر إعتماداً على خبر عبد الله بن عثمان: "أنَّه رأى أبا عبد الله عليه السلام أحفى شاربَه حتى ألزقه بالعسيب

It has been reported in a muwaththaq (reliable) hadith from al Sakuni, that Imam Sadiq (as) said: The Prophet (pbuh) said: "None of you should lengthen his mustache for indeed the shaytan takes it as a hideout to shelter him." So to ward off the evils of shaytan due to lengthening of the mustache, our Imams (as) ordered cutting off the mustache, and cutting off is referring to shaving off the mustache such that it sticks to the hairline/hair roots (i.e. shaving off the mustache such that only the roots of the hair are remaining) based on the report of Abdullah b. Uthman (in al Kafi by Shaikh Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 478) that he saw Aba Abdillah (as) shaving his mustache such that it stuck to the hairline/hair roots (i.e. only the roots of the hair remained).

 

Shaikh Yasser al Habib:

 

كلاهما من السنة، أعني القص والحلق، غير أن الثاني أكمل وأفضل كما يظهر من بعض الأخبار، ومنها ما رواه الكليني (عليه الرحمة) عن عبد الله بن عثمان ”أنه رأى أبا عبد الله عليه السلام أحفى شاربه حتى ألصقه بالعسيب“. (الكافي ج6 ص487) والحفّ هو المبالغة في الحلق، والعسيب هو منبت الشعر، والمعنى أن الصادق (عليه السلام) قد حلق شاربه من أصله.
كما أن هذا هو المستفاد من (الجزّ) كما في قوله صلى الله عليه وآله: ”إن المجوس جزوا لحاهم ووفّروا شواربهم، وإنّا نجزُّ الشوارب ونعفي اللحى، وهي الفطرة“. (من لا يحضره الفقيه للصدوق عليه الرحمة ج1 ص130

Trimming and shaving the mustache, they are both from the sunnah, nevertheless, shaving is best as is expressed in some ahadith, including what Shaikh Kulaini reported (in al Kafi, Volume 6 Page 487) from Abdullah b. Rahman that he saw Aba Abdillah (as) shaving his mustache such that it stuck to the hairline/hair roots (i.e. only the roots of the hair remained). This basically means that Imam al Sadiq (as) completely shaved off his mustache.

This is also understood from the saying of the Prophet (pbuh): "Indeed the majoos shave off their beards and lengthen their mustaches, while we shave off our mustaches and leave the beard (to grow), and this is the fitrah (the correct natural way)." ("Man la yahduruhul faqih" by Shaikh Sadooq,Volume 1 Page 130)
