Sahih (authentic hadith of) Ali b. Suwaid, who said: "I said to Abi al-Hasan (as): Indeed I am afflicted with looking at the beautiful woman, thus I like looking at her." So he (as) said to me: "O Ali, No Problem when Allah knew of  your true intention, but beware of Zina, for it wipes out the blessings and kills the faith."

And this (the hadith) is sahih (authentic), it is the pillar towards which leaned Shaikh al Adham (the greatest shaikh) in the ruling of permissibility.

Al Mawsu'ah al Faqih by Shaikh Fazel al Maliki

Narrated Kulaini (ra) from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, Ali b. al Hakam, from Ali b. Suwaid who said: "I said to Abi al-Hasan (as): Indeed I am afflicted with looking at the beautiful woman, thus I like looking at her." So he (as) said to me: "O Ali, No Problem when Allah knew of  your true intention, but beware of Zina, for it wipes out the blessings and kills the faith."

And it is a hadith with sahih isnad, and Baqir Majlisi has graded it sahih. The author of Jawahir al Kalam (Shaikh Muhammad al Jawahiri) and the master of the teachers (i.e. Shaikh Naraqi) followed suit, as well as others (scholars).

  1. And how exactly do you reconcile these hadiths with the clear verse that says to lower your gaze:
    قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ

And with the other hadiths that say to lower your gaze?

  2. There's a difference between merely looking at women and looking at them with lust. You posting this hadith without posting the others may lead to unknowing youths committing zina with their eyes.
Notice it says "Allah knows your intention"

But if a person keeps looking at women, it becomes a habit so it's something to keep in control

  3. @Anonymous: Salam (I don't know if it's one person or 2 different people, but anyway..)

As far as the Qur'anic ayah from Surah al Nur is concerned (which you've quoted), it's pretty general. Ahadith help us understand the specific fiqh rulings, and in this regard, while men (and women as well) are recommended to lower their gaze, we're allowed to look at women at first unintentional glance, for marriage, we're also allowed to look at dhimmi and nomadic women. So in this case, the hadith does mention the intention and severely warns against zina, so it's not like it's giving a green light for vulgarity.

As for posting this hadith without posting others, there are some reasons behind that.

    1) To let the shia brothers know in the first place that such a sahih hadith exists in our own books. Unfortunately our useless "scholars" have left no stone unturned to prevent the translation of our major ahadith books into English (that's why we still don't even have a translation of kutub al arba, whereas sunnis have translated their sihah sitta and other books into English and other languages).

Unfortunately these days shias themselves have placed heavy restrictions on early marriage, muta, polygamy etc, so some shia brothers are unfortunately tempted into looking at girls/women. Instead of letting them be, since they're fallible after all, other shias start criticizing them. While they think they're doing a good deed, they're actually sinning by criticizing their shia brother for something which isn't haram.

    2) As mentioned above, our scholars are reluctant to translate ahadith books, and shia websites usually just translate ahadith selectively by quoting politically correct, feel good ahadith about akhlaq only. The web is full of ahadith about lowering the gaze and everyone is aware of it. There isn't a need for me to quote those ahadith again. But I've NEVER seen a single shia website quote this hadith, that's why I quoted it here.

While it's best to lower one's gaze, at the end of the day, this hadith is very important since it would help prevent the sin of criticizing our innocent shia brothers who may sometimes look at girls/women because of undue restrictions on muta, marriage etc.

  4. As Salaamu Alaykum

Brother, perhaps it would be a good idea if in future, right at the end of the article, you had a little section entitled 'bhooka's thoughts', i can imagine you just want to present the ahadith as they are, but often a little section with the kind of info as you wrote above would make it alot clearer what the aim of certain articles was.

All in all, this was not a bad article, as many of us are left almost feeling like we have broken our fast by glancing around in public, so its good to know that it isn't quite the case.

    ws

Also, do you really think that if all our books were available in english it would change the overall mentality of people? I'm sure, many more are available in urdu, and there is no way any one can claim that has in anyway improved the outlook of people from the sub-continent on the teachings of the imams (a)

  5. @Anonymous: Wassalam,

I actually try my best to avoid putting my own thoughts/comments because then people get a good excuse to reject ahadith (even if they're sahih). Since no one wants to admit "I don't like so and so hadith", when I put my own thoughts/comments then it gives people an easy escape route because then they can just reject the hadith altogether under the pretext that "its bhooka's interpretation". Posting ahadith as it is stimulates people to reflect on them.

But yes, people are welcome to comment. They can ask for clarification, criticize, give feedback etc.

Lastly, regarding the translation of books, bro we don't really have many translations in Urdu either. To this day even al kafi is not fully translated in Urdu (it's only partially translated, and the quality of translation is terrible). Among Urdu shia books, what sells is the munazra (debate/polemics) books. The high number of shia books you'll see in Urdu, most of them are just munazra books. So we can't blame people from sub-continent. After all, as per ahadith it's the job of the scholars to teach first, the duty of the people to learn is secondary. So in this case how can we blame the people when our "ulema" prevent translation of ahadith books? Inshallah people will change positively if ahadith translations were made available to them.

In fact currently on the internet, there are more English sources available then in Urdu since bro Macisaac from sc forum started tashayyu.org. There is already a visible change on sc, instead of blindly following idiocies, some people on sc now quote ahadith from tashayyu.org.

May Allah (swt) make the translations of ahadith possible.
