Belief in Imam al Mahdi (as)

"An academic study of the prophetic sayings about the Mahdi", page 92, by Ayatullah Abul Fadhl al Burqei (Arabic translation by Dr. Sa'd Rustam)

Be aware that, over the passage of time*, it is famous among the majority of Muslims, that there must be an appearance of a man from the household of the Prophet (pbuh), at the end of times; [who will] support the religion, make justice appear, the Muslims will follow him and he will take charge of the Islamic nations, and he would be known as the 'Mahdi'.

*Ayatullah al Burqei's footnote: In our view, there was no existence of this thought in the time of the companions of the Prophet (pbuh), and this belief only propagated among the Muslims after the era of the companions.

  1. So that means according to ayatollahs there is no Imam Mahdi, and there are only 11 imams?

  2. Former Ayatollah* Al-Burqei left Tashayyu, just as you have, and became Salafi. His perspective on the concept of al-Mahdi holds limited significance due to his shift to a Salafi viewpoint. His interpretation lacks an unbiased stance, as it is influenced by his new affiliation.

Salam, actually he did not become Salafi (or sunni in general). In fact, as can be seen by his lack of belief in al-Mahdi via this post itself, his belief is completely contrary to Salafis’ who strongly believe in al-Mahdi, although of course they do differ in details with Shias, whereby they do not consider Mahdi to be son of Imam al-Askari(as) who is already born and in ghaybah, but instead believe he would be born born and emerge in end of times, without any long ghaybah or holding divine imamah; but nonetheless Salafis/Sunnis do believe in the concept and emergence of al-Mahdi, unlike Ayt. Burqei. Yes, Ayt. Burqei’s beliefs were not in line with mainstream Imami Ithna-ash’ari tashayyu, so it can be said he left Twelver Shi’ism, but he denied being a Sunni, and from what I’ve read of his works, it seems he should be considered a tafdhili Shia.
